The Emperor's New Tech

You've been caught in the midst of a conversation about the latest new tech gadget, or at least you think that's what they're talking about. You hear the word 'cache' and you just smile and nod- not wanting to appear uninformed, assuming that most others know about this new thing. Then you see this word appear on your phone and your computer.

By now, you probably have a hazy sense of its meaning, still assuming you must be the only one left out of the loop. You're not I promise. I am a computer whiz, and I really can't describe what a cache is exactly, and when it became so important. I am guessing it must be something that 'catches' your data or holds it.

Only, that word is actually pronounced, 'cash-ay.' Who knew? Probably no one you ever heard say it. Is our tech world maybe just a grander, more real life, version of, 'The Emperor's New Wardrobe.'
One of my children's favorite tales, it is about an Emperor who gets duped by a couple cunning young fabric salesmen who convince the Emperor they have the finest fabric to offer, and it has a special quality- only those who are smart can see it.

Before I finish that tale, can you picture right now what kinds of people do not own a smart phone? You are not of them right? Too poor, too young, too old or too dumb; you are smart, and you have money so you have a smart phone and smart people know what a 'cache' is...

The King walks into the fitting room to view this fantastic new fabric, and he cannot see it! Not wanting to appear dumb, after all he is the king, he gets fitted for an outfit made of the finest fabric. All his faithful servants 'ooh' and 'awe' over his new wardrobe, even though they can't see it  (they too did not want to appear dumb).

At last the King holds a parade to show the kingdom his fabulous new wardrobe- and the townspeople all cheer (no one wanted to be thought of as stupid), until a small child points out,

"He is Naked; The King has no clothes on."

All at once, the Kingdom erupts into laughter realizing that he indeed had no clothes on.

There is an insane amount of new technical terms, which apparently everyone else knows. What I find less apparent is who told them or where they are learning this. Better yet, is anyone in fact able to keep up or are we just keeping up appearances?
