Shame is a glitch

Shame is a Glitch

That sinking pit in your stomach and the hot flush through your face. We call this shame.  A special kind of embarrassment that follows rejection.

Shame is when you feel that you are bad, or not good enough; lesser than; unworthy.

"Saving face" is how we handle shame. With a tug at your collar, you straighten your back and clear your throat. Hoping no one noticed the seismic waves of shame that just toppled your tower.

"I am good enough," your body language tries to declare. But your hot flushed cheeks, the sudden loss of air, all make you acutely aware, of how, possibly you aren't as awesome as you wanted to be.

Job interview after job interview; cold call after cold call, date after date; request after request for a raise or a promotion. Denied, hung up on, rejected.

Ouch! The inner doubts that rejection can spur! Especially prolonged, continuous rejection. It can take a toll on our self-esteem and our motivation to continue trying.

However, this funny thing happens when you do keep trying. Confidence, boldness even, can arise from the ashes of what used to feel like shame. You are good enough. That response is just a glitch in your system.

Realize that feeling as just a physiological response in the body. When you feel it, acknowledge it as such and let it build your resolve to keep trying. For every no, gets you one step closer to a yes.

I have been in direct sales for over 10 years. Cold calling and door knocking. I have been hung up on thousands of times. I have had thousands of doors slammed in my face. That's what makes me a great saleswoman.

It wasn't because of all the times I heard "yes." It was all those times I had to hear "no." The "yes" will come, no doubt about it; but only after so many "no"s.

Develop a personal no-surrender policy as you move toward your goal. To rejection, I say,

"Bring it on."
